Brainstorm of Titles For Our Opening Sequence

We didnt think of a title until after the clip, so that it was easier analyse the clip and then think of a title that related to it Here is a brainstorm of titles we thought up that related to the opening sequence.

We finally went with the film title 'Paranoia'. This is because we thought it related most to the film idea due to the fact that the character Shanice, acts in a extremely paranoid and psychotic manner after she recieves a mysterious phonecall.
We aslo added an effect to the title when it was displayed on the screen at the end by placing a primary recording over the text being whispered.

Story Board

This is the original Story Board hand drawn..

This is more of the beginning of our Opening Sequence because the interview is what sets everything up and as an interview we had to ensure that we would still experiment and use a range of camera shots and angles as everything presented in an interview is very static between a person being intervied and the interviewer (teacher). We had to ensure that the shot reverse shots between these two were not all the same and boring so the storyboard helped remind us of using different camera angles/shots with what speech and what character and if there was any sound effects that were to be used.

Filming & Editing Schedule

December 2009

8th – On this day, we planned our opening sequence by creating the brief storyline.

11th – We came up with different ideas which may fit in better with the concept of a physiological thriller. We also
had to consider the resources we had available to do this.

16th – Our group took photos of each other to use for our profile pictures. We also took photos of certain surrounding which we were planning to use in the opening sequence.

January 2010

4th - The start of the filming, which all of us were included in. The setting of this scene was in a classroom. This was filmed after school, in order to use effective low key lighting.

15th- Our group stayed back after school to re-film and continue on with the scene that we had previously begun.

18th We continued to film the exiting of the classroom and we also managed to film the beginning of the aftermath from leaving the classroom. This included filming handheld shots. All of this filming was carried out after school.

19th - We carried on filming clips of the classroom but from different angles including from outside of the classroom.

21st - On this day, we uploaded all the footage we had. We looked over areas of improvement.

26th - Our group stayed behind after school to film the handheld scene which consisted of our entire group. This was a key scene in the storyline of the film. This scene was continuously filmed to make it perfect.

29th - On the 29th and the 3rd two members of our group worked in lesson to keep our blogs up to date. The other half of our group progressed in editing (rearranging clips, adding transitions and deleting clips that were not needed).

February 2010

3rd - We filmed over bits that were not as effective as they could be. For instance we went over bits from the classroom, in the form of a variety of different angles.

5th - Our group carried out research in lesson to find appropriate background music for certain clips in our opening sequence. We eventually managed to find one which we used.

10th - As well as continuously updating the blog, we also stayed behind after school to re film the handheld scene and the scene of Shanice going crazy in the classroom, this time using lighting.

17th - We recorded all the backing audio that we had to use (voice over’s).

18th - We filmed the interview scene which we had to arrange with teachers. We then uploaded the footage.

19th - We filmed the leading up to the interview waiting to be interview – set at the seating area).

March 2010

2nd - Our group arranged another date in the office to re film the interview. We had to improve on certain errors which we had made before, in terms of more camera angles as well as more shot reverse shot between the teacher and the student. We then edited after school as well as in lesson.

8th - On this day as well as the 12th and the 22nd, we uploaded the remaining footage and we then edited this order to create a smoother flow from clip to clip.

12th - On this day as well as the 8th and the 22nd, we edited this order to create a smoother flow from clip to clip.

22nd - On this day as well as the 8th and the 12th, we edited this order to create a smoother flow from clip to clip.

25th - We have finished!

Music

We legally downloaded an instrumental from youtube. It was a small clip of a piano that sounded slightly scary but not too much. We chose it because it was music that could play in the backgrounds of our scenes. It wasn't the type music to draw the audience away from what was really going on.

Here is the clip we downloaded
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETJ5cdDBoaE

The clip can also be found on our profile in "audio".

Another bit of audio that we had used in our Opening Sequence is the voice over at the end of "Paranoia". We recorded this using one of the girls voice (Natalia) by recording them say it on the mac computer on iMovie HD. This was simple as you could record straight onto the programme and the poject that was open. So we recorded a few versions and edited and chose one to use. The purpose of this is that the text not only looked to plain but the way that it was said was in a whisper almost and as for an opening sequence the movie would then carry on from this clip/scene in our Opening Sequence.

Props

The only prop used was the mobile phone. This was used at the scene where Shenice would go back to the classroom as this what she forgot.

This was an important prop because this is what caused the drama in the first place. We knew that this is what will make audiences wonder what was it about the phone call that caused Shenice to react. This is apart of the whole mystery and the trigger to her astranged behaviour.

Feedback On Opening Sequence, Feedback On Clips Not Used & Why

Feedback on overall Opening Sequence Amount of people asked 20 Questions asked: 1)Did you enjoy the Opening sequence? 2)What Element did you like most about the opening sequence? (choose 2) 3)Did you understand the storyline? 4)Did you think the acting was good? 5)Did you find the music effective and did it create suspence? The general answer for this was yes the music did create suspence and caused those who watched it to want to watch more. 6)Do you think our film holds conventions of a thriller? if so, what? The common answer was "suspence" which people said it was is usually found in a thriller. 7)How would you improve our opening sequence? The improvements told by others were things like, having the setting darker would be better. Someone said create more suspense. Better acting. Actors should look more traumatised. The acting and the sript needs work and there was also someone saying we should change the title. Not all these things we feel are relevant because i feel that people were thinking about what they the individual wants as in they were being rather picky. Looking at the time we had, if we had more most of these points we would definately apply to our O.S. 8)Would you want to see the rest of the film? Most people said yes. 9)What would you rate the Opening sequence from a scale of 1-10 (1 being the lowest etc) Clips Not used why? The clips that we decided to disinclude were these two below the clip that involved Shanice singing turned out to be irrelevant as the filming went on.
We found that it didn't really make sense and also confused us when it came to thinking about how it would flow onto the next scene. So we decided to cut this out and instead of saying we were filming a music video. We changed our film idea to us starting with a group of students just together doing work.

The clip in which we had the group leaving the block and messing around with the camera was removed because of the time limit that we had for the opening sequence.

We also removed it because we realised it wasn't so relevant and this was just an opening sequence we didn't want to much to occur in such a short space of time. The clip we thought was very good, the clip that showed paranoia We liked this scene because it took all of us as a group to work together to make this work. The idea of us just flickering the lights to create the effect allowed us not to have to apply so much editing to it. This is also the scene that builds creates that paranoia effect just like the name of the opening sequence. This is what startled those who viewed it, this scene drew them into the sequence and caused them to really focus and leave them in suspence.

Initial Ideas

Initial Film Ideas
- Teenage Girl goes on killing spree and kills all the boys she has dated due to a curse given to her when born.
- Boy murdered, best freind unfolds the mystery behind the murder
- Girl abused by bully, turns into psychopath
- 4 teens in a media group , little do they know that one of them is a psycho, however all working together until they start to get freaked out by eachother
- teenager finds large amount of money in a train station and doesnt know what to do with it..unaware that he has soem of London's biggest gangstas tracking him/her

Types Of Characters We Would Use In Our Opening Sequence:
- Young adults - the reason we would definitley young adults/teenagers as our main characters is because as we are teenagers ourselves it is more convenient then having to schedule to film an adult and we can relate more to their lifestyles so easier to act out.

- Detective
- Psychopath
- Criminal/Villain
- The undercover enemy (enemy pretending to be friends with main (good natured) character but is secretly evil.

All of the above character types have a sense of mystery behind them, and to build up a film there needs to be alot of mystery and questioning, therefore these are strong characters to fill our film with suspense.
`
Types Of Locations We Would Prefer To Use:
- Basement
- Photography darkroom
- Park
- Canteen Area
- Elms Office

Location

This is just outside the room that the group of students were in - this is where they would come to when they leave the room on the other side. We chose this location because the classroom was not to far from the door and in front had night lights which were like dimmed glow that helped anchor a convention of a thriller, and create an eery atmosphere.

This is the door opposite the image above - this is where the group would exit.

Here is another better view of the block and the windows to the right is where Shenice would be filmed when she receives the phone call.

This is inside the classroom. Flashbacks would be filmed in here and this is also where Shenice comes in to get her phone and is filmed throwing furniture around.

When the group exits, this is where they would go on after they leave the classroom. They would walk down this pathway to exit the school.
As ideas changed and time went over, we decided later on to not film this part.

As for this image, it is a view of when you leavce the school gates. This is where the group of students would walk down and split up to go there seperate ways and eventually lead to a scream or somethign happening to one of them.
As for the previous image, this was not used or filmed because of time going over and ideas changing.

Analysing Results

When looking at the result above it showed us that most people liked thrillers that were phycological. From this we will make sure that our opening sequence will show phycological elements because it is only an opening sequence not an entire film. If it was an entire film we would most probably use this result to choose the genre of thriller, because that is what most of our audience would like.
